Lidl Ireland Site, Beechlawn Way, Terenure, Dublin 6W

Excavation Licence no. 13E0133, 2013

Archaeological test trenching was carried out on the Lidl Ireland site at Rathfarnham Road/ Beechlawn Way, Terenure, Dublin 6W. This site, best known as the former Sunday World headquarters, was derelict. It was the subject of a planning application to Dublin City Council by Lidl Ireland for a food retail centre and carpark. The development plan had permission granted by An Bord Pleanala (ABP) ref. PL29S.240744 subject to conditions.

Test trenching on the site took place between the 29th and 30th April, 2013. The site was covered with tarmac in many areas and this was broken by rock-breaker. It was discovered that deep basements were present in the heavily concreted south area of the site formerly occupied by the Sunday World Offices. These were covered in places by sheets of metal and the depth at this point was found to be 4.3m. Prior to the development of the site as the Sunday World Offices, the site had been occupied by a laundry from at least the early 19th century.

Archaeological monitoring of all subsurface works was carried out for the development between 20 June and 02 November 2013. Though 18th and 19th century pottery came to light on the site, no features archaeological features were discovered.
